Competition Themes for 2017

2017 sees us continue with six (6) competitions throughout the year and an End Of Year competition at yearend.

All members are encouraged to take photos for the purpose of entering the competition rather than trawling their catalogue for images that match the set theme.  The purpose of the competitions is to inspire creativity and to challenge members to produce quality images for the purpose of entry.  With each set subject we will also include an Open category pool. In the open category you are permitted to enter any image for consideration.

A note of change, for 2017 we are requiring the images be entered two meetings prior to the judging night (rather than just one) to give more time to the committee and judges to organise their delivery and deliberations. To that end, the first competition is due at our first meeting of the year.

Novice competitions are always "Open" and don't need to conform to the theme of the round.

Our set subjects for 2017 are listed below.  The subject descriptions may evolve over time:

Unloved, Open, and Novice

Unwanted, lost, abandoned, in a state of decay... unloved is one to go for the emotional heartstring-pulling portraits, broken architecture, distressed toys.

Entries due: February 14, 2017.

Patterns, Open, and Novice

Found in nature and of manmade sources. We're looking for patterns and repetition in your image.

Entries due: March 28, 2017.

Abstracts, Open, and Novice.

It's a photo that doesn't look as it seems. It can be a part of something framed so it's unfamiliar, but still interesting. It could also be a technical artistic flare that creates a beautiful image.

Entries due: May 9, 2017.

Environmental Portrait, Open, and Novice

An environmental portrait, is an image captured of a subject (usually a person) an environment that gives the viewer a better understanding of the person. It's not necessarily an "action" or "doing" image, in fact most often it's not. The subject is typically still interacting with the photographer and the camera, but they are surrounded by their "thing", be it a hobby, workplace, home, etc.

See our Pinterest board, "Environmental Portraits", for inspiration.

Of the environmental portrait  Jonathan Bielaski had this to say to The Phoblographer:

To me a perfect environmental portrait is a portrait that tells a story, you are learning something about the person in the portrait with out the use of words. The background and foreground are just as important as the person in telling the story but they are the supporting cast and the person is the lead roll. On their own they could make good images but together they make a great image.

Entries due: June 27, 2017.

Silhouettes, Open, and Novice

The idea behind the silhouette is to capture a subject with a strong outline, usually backlit, with a black, detail-free interior. Best achieved with well defined forms, people, trees, buildings, but really anything you can imagine.

See our Pinterest board, "Silhouettes", for inspiration.

Entries due: August 8, 2017.

Umbrellas, Open and Novice

A rather basic one to round the year out, the old umbrella. Be literal, or interpretive, but be an umbrella all the same. The umbrella does not have to be THE subject of your image, but it should be more than incidentally in the image. It should play a part in making your image's story.

See our Pinterest board, "Umbrella", for inspiration.

Entries due: September 26, 2017.

End of Year Competition

Entries for the End of Year Competition must have been entered in one of the earlier competitions in 2017. It doesn't have to have earned a placing, just been entered. You are free to make changes to the image, however it must be entered in the same format it was entered previously.

Entries Due: October 24, 2017.

Upcoming

Workshop: Matt Cutting

To help out members who don't regularly mount their printed works we're putting on a special informal meeting a week prior to our official start so you can enter prints into our first competition of the year. There will be folks who regularly matt their own work in attendance to help us out and they'll have the equipment and matt board required for you to use.

Bring along the prints you wish to make matts for and go away having made your first matts and armed with the knowledge you need to enter prints throughout the year.
